A retrofit changes the sums

Built-in refrigeration around here is often newer than the kitchen it stands in. A full-height cabinet goes into a run first drawn for a plug-in unit, and the joiner closes the gap with a filler or a solid kick because it looks right. It does look right. But a built-in takes its cooling air in low at the front and pushes the heat straight back out there, and a face with no open area in it turns that into one pocket of warm air being breathed twice.

What Sub-Zero asks for

The safety instructions are plain about it: the ventilation openings, both in the unit and in the structure built around it, are to be kept clear. On a Designer cabinet the condenser sits behind the kickplate, held by two screws. Sub-Zero asks for a clean somewhere between every six and every twelve months, and for the power to be off at the control panel before the plate comes away. Lint across those fins does the same thing a blocked kick does, only slowly.

The room counts too

Sub-Zero lists a warmer room as a reason the compressors run longer, and that is not a fault. A small kitchen with the oven on, a unit beside a run of glass, a laundry appliance venting into the same alcove: all of them raise the air the condenser has to work with. We measure the room alongside the cabinet, so the difference between a warm kitchen and a failing part is a reading rather than an opinion.

What happens on the call

The grille comes off, the fins and the fan are looked at, and the compartments are logged against their settings. If the air path explains the running, the repair is at the air path. If it does not, we say so and price what does.
