A Designer over-and-under puts one hinged door above two drawers in an 84-inch opening, and the cabinetmaker's panels cover all three fronts. Three fronts on one cabinet
The over-and-under is the tall member of the Designer family, 30 or 36 inches wide. A hinged door covers the upper compartment and two drawers sit beneath it, each face carrying a custom panel. In Sub-Zero’s current design guide, DET3050R and DET3650R are all refrigerator, DET3050CI and DET3650CI are combinations with an ice maker, and DET3050FI is all freezer with an ice maker. Units bought before the DET name carry IT-30 and IT-36 designations and are built on the same plan.
The order the panels go on
Sub-Zero’s installation guide hangs the door panel first, then the upper drawer panel, then the lower one, and the three are aligned together with every front closed. That sequence explains how faults travel. A door panel that has dropped closes the reveal above the upper drawer, and a drawer front adjusted to meet it carries the error one step further down.
Weight is the other half. Sub-Zero’s limit for a drawer panel is a fraction of the door’s, and hinges, brackets and slides carry every pound of it each time a front opens.
What drifts, and why
- Level. The guide sets the cabinet level to the floor, not to the counters round it, and notes that a level unit is less likely to need its fronts adjusted. A cabinet levelled to match crooked cabinetry twists all three reveals at once.
- Bracket cams. Each panel hangs on brackets with cams for up-and-down and in-and-out movement. Once a bracket screw loosens, that front can wander.
- Slides. A heavy basket, ice from a seal leak, or wear makes a drawer drag and stop short of the frame.
- Drawer seals. Each drawer has its own gasket. A drawer that stops short leaves that seal clear of the frame, and frost builds from there.
What we measure first
The model and serial come from the rating plate, which on tall models sits inside the cabinet to the left of the upper drawer. Then the level, then the three reveals with every front shut, then each drawer seal. Fronts are set right before any temperature is logged, since a drawer standing slightly open would skew every reading we took.

- Grille and Toe-Kick Panels That No Longer Sit Square We check the kickplate fit and whether the condenser behind it has room to breathe. A kickplate out of square can also mean the unit has shifted.

Which part of an over-and-under is the freezer?
The letters after the width say. R means all refrigerator, FI all freezer with an ice maker, and CI a combination: refrigerator behind the door, freezer in the drawers below. How heavy may the door and drawer panels be on a DET unit?
Sub-Zero's installation guide sets 50 lb for the door panel on the 30-inch tall model and 60 lb on the 36-inch, but only 15 lb for each drawer panel. None may be thinner than 5/8 inch. A drawer front cut from the same heavy stock as the door can pass its limit unnoticed.
Is an older IT-30 or IT-36 handled the same way?
