Sub-Zero’s list for no ice

The Designer guide gives owners a short list when no ice is coming: the ice cube symbol showing on the control, the ice maker switched on for at least a full day, the freezer near 0°F, the ice container properly in place, the shut-off arm down, water reaching the unit, and a water filter changed within the last year and seated properly. Where the house runs a reverse-osmosis system, the guide has the unit’s own filter taken out.

Where the door comes in

Freezer temperature is on that list for a reason, and it is where our part begins. A freezer door that has stopped sealing holds the compartment above its setting, and a warm freezer makes ice poorly with nothing wrong in the ice maker.

Reaching the ice maker behind a panelled door takes some planning. The ice container is reached by pulling a freezer basket open, and on a column freezer whose door is limited to 90 degrees, the guide has the top basket out before a lower one. The same guide asks for the ice maker to be switched off whenever the container is out; a three-minute delay keeps cubes from dropping in the meantime. We follow that order rather than forcing a basket past a door that will not open wider.

When the list is clear
