Before the grille comes off

Sub-Zero’s own troubleshooting list begins with what an owner can see. No lights and no cooling points to power: the unit switched off at its control panel, or a tripped breaker on its circuit. Cooling with the lights out can mean a door or drawer stood ajar long enough for the unit to shut its lights off to limit heat; an hour with the door closed should bring them back.

On current Designer units, a display reading 38° and 0° over a cabinet that is not cold can mean the unit is sitting in showroom mode. That is a setting, not a failed part.

Then the door

A panelled door that no longer closes fully lets room air in faster than the system can take it out. The compartment reads warm while every part behind the grille is doing its job. So the seal is measured before anything else, and the reveals around the panel with it. If the seal holds everywhere, the door is ruled out and the readings move inward.

Behind the grille

On Designer units the condenser sits behind the kickplate, and dust packed across it raises both temperatures and running time. After the condenser come the fans, then the defrost side, then the sealed system on gauges. Each step is measured before the next is opened, so by the time the compressor is questioned, a clean coil and a turning fan are known rather than assumed.
