What flush means on a Designer column

Every Designer model is 24 inches deep, and Sub-Zero tells the kitchen planner to add the panel thickness when the opening is drawn. At installation the unit is moved until its front lines up with the cabinetry, then screwed through the side trim on each side. Flush is a setting made on the day, and settings drift.

Why a door ends up standing out

• The unit sits forward. It was fixed short of the cabinet faces, or its side-trim screws have lost their hold.
• The level has changed. Sub-Zero asks for levelling to the floor, not to the cabinets, and says a mistake here can upset door closing. Legs set to match a counter, or a floor relaid round the column, can tip the top of the panel outward.
• The panel has moved on its brackets. The in-and-out cam can leave a panel standing off a unit that is itself flush.
• A thicker panel went on, in an opening drawn for the original.

What we measure first

The straightedge shows whether the whole unit is forward or only the panel. A face out of line from top to bottom points to depth or the side-trim fixing. A panel leaning out at the top over a flush base points to level or the in-and-out cam. The levelling legs are reached from the front, so the column stays in its opening while they are set.

What it rules out

Only with the panel in plane do we run a paper strip round the door and log temperatures. Before that, frost at one corner proves nothing about the cooling. If the opening is too shallow for the panel now fitted, the fix is joinery, and we give the cabinetmaker the depth the unit needs.
