Torn or Flattened Gasket on a Column Door
A torn or flattened gasket on a Designer column lets room air past the door, and the cabinet answers with frost, sweating and long run times. What a failing seal looks like
- A split, or a torn corner.
- A length pressed flat that no longer springs back when the door opens.
- A fold where the gasket has rolled over and now meets the frame on its edge.
- A line of frost just inside the door, or water beading on the frame.
Any one of these lets air through. The paper strip shows where; the eye alone often misses a flat section.
Why the panel matters here
On a column, the custom panel adds leverage. A heavy panel that has dropped at the handle side opens a gap at the top corner, even against a new gasket. So the hinge and the reveal are measured on the same visit. A new gasket on a sagging door lasts only until it is crushed again.
What the repair involves
The whole gasket is replaced, not patched. It is fitted round the door corner first and left to settle against the frame, then the strip test is run again at all six points. The temperatures are logged last, once the door is known to be tight.

Can a gasket be cleaned instead of replaced?
A dirty but whole gasket, yes, with the mild soap-and-water mix Sub-Zero gives for the interior, dried well afterwards. Cleaning will not close a tear or lift a section that has pressed flat.
