What sag looks like on a column

• The gap along the top of the panel widens toward the handle side.
• The lower corner on the handle side starts to brush whatever sits beside or below it.
• The door wants a lift at the handle before it will close fully.
• The gasket stands off the frame at the top corner, and frost may start there.

The limits Sub-Zero prints

The Designer installation guide and the current design guide give the same maximum weight per panel:

• 24-inch column: 60 lb
• 30-inch column: 75 lb
• 36-inch column: 75 lb

Every panel must be at least 5/8 inch thick. It may be thicker, and taller than the standard size, only while it stays inside that weight.

Why weight matters more than age

The hinge is sized for a panel within the rating. Solid hardwood slabs, applied mouldings, stone or metal inlay and a long bar handle all add pounds, and a panel can pass the limit without looking heavy. Load it was never drawn for adds to the wear too: an open door used as a handhold, or leaned on while someone reaches into a low drawer.

A door that sags on a light panel tells a different story. There we look harder at the hinge and at how the unit stands before blaming the joinery.

What the repair is

A suspect panel comes off its brackets and is weighed. A worn hinge is replaced. If the panel is over the limit, lightening or remaking it is cabinetmaker work; we hand over the figure for that width and the 5/8 inch minimum. With the panel rehung, the reveals are reset on the screws and cams, and a paper strip at the top corner confirms the seal has come back.
